Gum Shields

What is the difference between a custom made gumshield and a gumshield you can mould yourself?

A self moulded or boil ‘n’ bite gumshield are not nearly as reliable or protective as a custom made gumshield.

The custom fit gumshield is made using impressions of your teeth, so it fits you perfectly. They are also comfy to wear, whilst being tight enough to hold in your mouth.

Boil ‘n’ bite gumshields can fall out very easily and sometimes they can become hazardous – for example, they can be swallowed or impede breathing. Custom fit gumshields also carry the recommendation of major sporting bodies, like the Rugby Football Union, as well as companies such as the British Dental Association.

How do I get a custom made gumshield?

Our gumshields are available at more than five thousand dental surgeries in the UK and also in Eire. All you need to do is to ask for our product by name and they will take your impression and send it to us. If you like, you can order a brochure from us and take it with you to show your dentist what you would like.

You can do this on the ‘contact us’ page on this website. Once we receive your impression, we will pour plaster into them, make models and then construct your gumshield.

How long does it take to make a gumshield?

It takes approximately 7 working days for it to be ready for fitting by your dentist.

Can a gumshield be made over a fixed brace?

Yes. Our laboratory will block out the brace on the model, to allow you to wear a gumshield, but the teeth are moving rapidly and so your gumshield will not fit for long. If a brace is due to be fitted later in the year, you will require a new gumshield once it has been fitted.

We recommend that you do not wear a removable brace, as it could break in the event of an impact.

What if milk teeth are still present or teeth are erupting?

No problem. The technicians will use special material to block out erupting teeth to give the patient a few more months wear.

Removable Appliances

A variety of active appliances can be fabricated for arch width and arch length development.  Active designs are beneficial for development of the arches prior to fixed treatment.

A minimum of four clasps is suggested to maximize retention.  In addition to our standard designs; springs, small expansion screws and wires can be added to move individual teeth.

Study Models

Your impressions and bases will be poured as one unit in a bubble free mix of our own Super White orthodontic plaster.

This is a hard plaster that produces accurate and durable study models giving you expertly finished models you will be proud to present. The models will then be trimmed to exact bite relationships.

All but the rough-cut models will then be hand sculpted, this sculpting will carefully blend the anatomical tissue to the model's base and also remove any unwanted blemishes caused by voids or air pockets in the impression. Great care is taken not to damage any soft tissue detail.

You can be confident of getting professional results because RM Advanced Orthodontics has specialized in making study models for over 25 years.

Functional Appliances

The functional appliances include Activators, Frankels, Bionators, Orthopedic Correctors, and Twin Block designs.

You can choose from various removable and fixed appliance designs. All functional appliance designs address Skeletal Class II problems by advancing the mandible forward to a corrected Class I position.

How To Send a Case

All Functional Appliance designs require accurate working models. A construction bite should be provided to indicate the amount of mandibular advancement.

Acrylic designs require a posterior opening of 2mm to 3mm to allow for proper appliance fabrication.

Bite Raising Appliances

This is an mechanical appliance that covers the biting surfaces of the teeth and separates them, lifting them apart.  Often used in TMJ disorder cases.

Indicated in cases where there is severe loss of occlusal surface due to attrition or erosion resulting into severe sensitivity lowering of vertical dimension.

Mouth preparation:

  • Slightly round off all sharp points and edges so that casting will fit better.
  • Ask patient to rinse mouth thoroughly before taking impression to avoid trapping of air bubble in eroded surface.
  • Use alginate impression material and pour the impression in good quality dental stone.
  • Where there is heavy loss of occlusal surface in upper and lower both arches, this prosthesis is suggested for both arches raising V D by 3 to 4 mm.
  • Onlay like cover, 1 to 2 mm thick, is design covering all posterior teeth as many as possible , connected with palatal or lingual bar, if necessary palatal or lingual surfaces of anteriors teeth is also covered. Any missing teeth can be replaced in some casting.
  • After 15 to 30 days of use , patient will wear it for day and night and will happily use it for mastication.

Advantages:

  1. Improves Mastication & asthetic.
  2. Removes first degree Mobility & Bruxism.
  3. Increase Life of remaining teeth.

Removable Retainers

The Hawley Retainers are used for finished orthodontic cases to securely maintain the teeth in their new position. RM Advanced Orthodontics finishing retainers meet all the major criteria for effective retention of you finished orthodontic cases.

Bracket Carving/Removal

To assure stability for your finished cases, RM Advanced Orthodontics can accurately remove brackets from working models. Your retainer can be inserted at the de-bracketing visit. This eliminates the possibility of "drifting" of the teeth between patient visits. It is important to take the impression with the arch wire removed to prevent the impression material from tearing.

Fixed appliances

Fixed appliances are for correcting a host of common orthodontic problems, such as molar distalization, molar rotation, arch expansion, and habit correction.  Stainless steel wire is used in fabrication and is available in a number of round and rectangular sizes.  A fixed habit appliance can be designed for tongue thrust and thumb sucking habits, and can be modified for more aggressive treatment.

Fixed Expanders

Upper

Fixed maxillary and mandibular expanders include a broad range of appliance designs. The designs are used to correct cross-bites, narrow arches and crowding. The fixed expanders utilize some mechanism of force (expansion screws, self-activating wire or wire activation) for development of the arch.
